Strategic management helps an organization to define, plan, agree, implement and evaluate its strategy. The executives of the organization are responsible for it, but software product managers are typically involved in it, in particular in portfolio management, innovation management, and budgeting. The product manager may be asked to participate in some of the discussion, provide relevant inputs, and make use of the results by aligning his/her product strategy to the organization’s strategy. For market and product analysis, the product manager may even be directly responsible unless there is a dedicated team for these tasks.
So how can the product manager contribute to strategic management? How can she/he influence results? And what do these results mean for the individual product?
This tutorial is based on the ISPMA Excellence Level syllabus “Software Product Management: Strategic Management” and prepares the participants for the corresponding ISPMA certification exam that is offered right at the end of the tutorial (optional). ISPMA also provides syllabi and certification for SPM Foundation Level and the SPM Excellence Level trainings “Product Strategy”, “Product Planning” and “Orchestration”.
