15Bede McCarthy is a product leader with 20 years’ experience in the media industry. He currently oversees product strategy and development at Financial Times, and is a member of the group’s senior management team.
Bede has been responsible for a bold transformation of the product team, processes and governance at the FT towards outcome-driven development grounded in data and customer need. He manages a team of 50 people including product management, customer research, design, UX, engineering and FT Labs
Under Bede’s leadership, FT.com was rebuilt to deliver 20 per cent higher customer engagement and the product team has delivered new products to market including Scout.asia and a revamped Nikkei Asian Review.
Bede began his career as a journalist in New Zealand and transitioned to product while at the Financial Times, where he has more than a decade of experience working as a product owner and manager in agile delivery teams and leading change in both the newsroom and the business. As a journalist, Bede held roles as a news editor and correspondent, and was Executive Editor of FT.com for four years, where he led digital strategy in the newsroom and helped design the post-print workflow.
